Stranger & Stranger Transformation Cards

I was commissioned by Stranger & Stranger to contribute 3 cards to their Annual Holiday Promotional Gift. They have done many amazing creations in the past, but this one is beyond beautiful. I’m thrilled to be represented in this stunning presentation among other incredible artists.

A transformation playing card is a type of playing card where an artist incorporates the pips of the non-face cards into an artistic design. The cards came in an impeccably designed box, with lettering and design gilded in gold, and the card decks themselves in small velvet pouches.

I did the King of Spades as a bull who’s horns make the shape of a spade, a Jack of Diamonds where I used a Jackal to represent the Jack, and the Four of Clubs which shows a lemur sitting in an orange tree; the groups of oranges make the shapes of clubs.

VML Wine Label Exists!!

IT’S FINALLY HERE!! VML 2011 Russian River Gewurtzraminer

My previous post about the amazing Stranger & Stranger Creative agency, recounts how thrilled I was to work on this project for VML winery, creating the artwork for their 2011 Gewürztraminer. After a long wait, it has finally come to fruition in it’s physical state!

I worked with Stranger & Stranger to come up with an image that would depict VML’s principle wine maker as a sort of botanical witch. Virginia Marie Lambrix is a biodynamic winemaker in California, of which her methods sounded similar to actions of witches and wizards.

My Green Summer

I just updated my WEBSITE with most of the projects I’ve been working on all summer. They all have an uncanny common thread…

All of the illustrations are filled with FLORA! When I went through all of my photos this summer, it was clear where this inspiration came from. My summer has been full of green!

Stranger & Stranger

I was lucky enough to recently work with Stranger & Stranger on a job that I’ve always dreamed of doing- A WINE LABEL!!! For years and years my love for wine has flourished, and as all those bottles and bottles of wine have been drunk, it’s been impossible not to notice all the great illustration being used for the labels. I’ve pined and drooled over Bonnie Doon labels among others, scheming and dreaming of how to be included in the club.

The day finally came when Cosimo Surace of Stranger & Stranger appeared and offered me my dream job- to create a wine label for a Russian River Valley winery, depicting the wine maker as a botanical witch. Here’s a sneak peek of my in-progress. More details to come soon.

Not only was the job something I couldn’t have even dreamed up myself, the chance to work with this incredible design agency was beyond flattering. Their expertise in design is impeccable- to have my work live within the design that these guys do is truly and honor. Soon I’ll post more about the project I’ve done with them, but in the meantime, I wanted to share some of the fantastic work that they’ve done in the past (please note, I did NOT work on the following):

Had so much fun creating this for the very nice folks at The Tomato in Canada! I’m ready for summer eating! I liked it on black, they liked it on blue! What do you think?

Featured Artist: Lisel Jane Ashlock

Lisel Jane Ashlock grew up in Northern California, but her move to New York City made her even more determined to explore the natural world in her illustration work. She meticulously renders foliage, animals, and landscapes, so that she can then carve the small studies into building blocks for a larger subject. Every single natural element strains to tell the story behind the painting, and her portraits feel all the more human for it.

Lisel is one of our featured illustrators for Paper Darts Volume 4. An excerpt from her interview from the magazine can be found below. Make sure to visit her gorgeous new website for context for the illustrations and to drown yourself in more of her insanely beautiful work. Also, do not miss her delightful answers to ourcontributor questions

So excited about the book cover art and lettering design I just finished for Corinna Vallianatos’s collection of wonderful short stories entitled “My Escapee” for the University of Massachusetts Press.

Just handed off this portrait of Lyndon B Johnson to the Progressive Magazine. It’s to support a sceptic review about the new biography, which leaves out major moments of corruption that he committed in his political career, leaving the reader to feel like they are not getting the whole picture on who he was as a man.

Just finished this project for OUT magazine about Poet Jonathan Galassi, with Art Director, Sarah Olin. LOVED this project and wanted to share my in-progress from sketches to finish. Click Here to read the article! Click Here to view this on my site.

Lisel Ashlock
Sort of Symbolist, and certainly rich in hue and content, Lisel Ashlock’s pieces conjure up the fantastic, both real and imaginary.  I’m a huge fan of her frequent use of birch for her canvass, and her integration of its grain into her overall work.
